Understanding Stigma: The Fight for Acceptance

I found an old writing of mine that still applies to this day. Here it is:

Most people are taught to not be afraid of showing their differences. Then there are others who are taught to hide those differences because they are to different…. Sounds like an odd thing huh?

We both praise and reprimand for the same thing based on what is a “normal” difference. I was taught to hide the fact I need to stim and hide the fact that my senses are always hyper aware. These aren’t normal, they are different. Yet don’t we praise differences? I have learned that this is very much not the case. I have learned that those horrid stigmatic, hypocritical, contradictory and many other vile ways to how we treat those who are different….. or would it be more correct to say not the right different. No wonder our children and even the adults are confused.

I hope that by inviting you into my mind and to share my life, the ups, downs and sideways while I learn who I am, how this will shape everything I do every day. Correct the big words yes, education deals with the rest. After all ignorance is a choice then. So you will see some of those ‘it’s not right to say’ words here as I rather focus on problem not being politically correct.

We can’t let that “a rose by any other name smells as sweet” be forgotten. Through education on the issues; the core issues, and working on correcting those. We need people and we need the older values to come back such as knowing the name of your neighbor. Helping where help is needed…. we didn’t have world peace back then. Not by far, however there was more over all happiness. We are supposed to be pack animals, not lone wolves.

Hopefully I can share this effectively so you can step into my shoes and who knows what you might learn. This is my journey not only to find out the answer to the question of who am I? Find a better way to live so I can build what I ache for, inner peace. I want to hear in the neighborhood one day to people saying hi as they walk by someone who lives in the neighborhood as well. Let us bring back that village, let us become the united pack we should be. This is just my view, it doesn’t need to be yours. I am just opening up and being vulnerable to help people understand different things better from the point of view of the individual with the challenge.

I would love to hear from you!
