The Seven Grandfather Teachings: Love (sâkihitowin ᓵᑭᐦᐃᑐᐏᐣ)

The Seven Grandfather Teachings—Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, and Truth—are anchors, guiding me toward a life that resonates with my heart and soul. Reflecting on these teachings, one at a time, feels like a meaningful way to grow and improve. Today, my reflection is on Love.

Love (sâkihitowin ᓵᑭᐦᐃᑐᐏᐣ) feels like the heartbeat of the Seven Grandfather Teachings. In the Plains Cree tradition, Love is more than an emotion—it is a sacred bond to all living things. It teaches us to nurture the relationships that connect us to one another, the land, the waters, and all beings in Creation. This teaching reminds us that we are all interconnected, bound together by a respect born of gratitude.

In practice, Love speaks to generosity—giving of ourselves without expecting anything in return. It is compassion and empathy in action, challenging us to hold space for others while also honoring the love we have for ourselves. In the Plains Cree worldview, Love sustains balance and harmony, encouraging us to live with care and mindfulness within our communities.

Elders often share a story that illustrates the essence of Love. There was once a young man who felt overwhelmed by difficulties in life, disconnected from his family and community. Seeking guidance, he visited an Elder who listened patiently to his struggles.

The Elder handed the young man a simple, smooth pebble and said, “Carry this stone with you every day. It represents your love for yourself and your love for others. Whenever you feel frustrated or disconnected, hold it and reflect on how love can bring you peace.”

At first, the young man didn’t understand the lesson. But over time, the stone became a symbol of grounding. It taught him that love wasn’t only about others—it was also about giving himself grace and forgiveness. As his heart softened, he found he could approach his community with renewed compassion and understanding.

Weeks later, the young man returned to the Elder, transformed. “The stone taught me to carry love with me—always,” he said. The Elder smiled and replied, “Love is not complicated. It’s simply a choice you make every day, in every action, big or small.”

Reflecting on this teaching, I feel its gentle encouragement to show kindness through my actions, to embrace vulnerability, and to honor the bonds that make life meaningful. It’s a reminder to walk through the world with intention, striving to live a life rooted in love. Perhaps I should carry a stone with me, too, and deepen my connection to this teaching.

Disclaimer:

These reflections on Plains Cree teachings are part of my personal journey to gain clarity and understanding. While these teachings are central to my identity, I recognize there is always more to learn. I encourage you to consult an Elder for accurate guidance, as my interpretations may not always be correct.

I would love to hear from you!
