The Heartbeat of Change: Voices Shaping Today

This section and its subpages focus on important issues like societal concerns, government systems with more cracks than a dry riverbed, healthcare challenges, and #215 survivor stories. Together, these topics represent the heart of this section, encouraging reflection, dialogue, and action.

As a Cree iskwew (ᐃᐢᑵᐤ, woman), my heritage guides this work. The #215 survivor stories are included not as a singular focus, but as an integral representation of this section’s purpose. These stories preserve truths, amplify voices, and honor Indigenous oral traditions on Turtle Island. They remind us to learn from the past so we don’t stumble into the same mistakes while wearing the same worn-out makasinan (ᒪᑲᓯᓇᐣ, moccasins).

Reader submissions are central to this space. Anonymous contributions are welcomed, ensuring respect and inclusivity. Repeated mentions of specific issues keep awareness alive and meaningful.

This section isn’t solely about challenges. It may also inspire a space to celebrate the rich culture of Indigenous communities on Turtle Island and beyond. Indigenous cultures from around the world deserve to be highlighted, like the northern lights dancing across the sky.

Many Indigenous histories are shared through kahkiyaw askiy (ᑲᐦᑭᔭᐤ ᐊᐢᑭᐩ, all the land) in oral traditions rather than writing. As the world changes, I hope this space explores new ways to preserve and share these vital and beautiful stories. Through both traditional and modern methods, we can keep the depth and spirit of our cultures alive for future generations.
