Learning About Plains Cree Teachings: A Personal Beginning

Learning and reflecting on teachings is a journey that allows us to explore values that guide us and connect us to a deeper sense of self, culture, and community. Teachings like the Seven Grandfather Teachings—Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, and Truth—offer principles that feel both timeless and profoundly meaningful. They provide wisdom to help shape the choices we make and the way we live our lives, creating a deeper resonance with our heart and soul. Reflecting on them, I’ve realized that deepening my connection to these teachings will help me grow and embody the principles that truly call to me.

This is where I will begin. I plan to post one teaching each week, sharing my reflections and what I’m learning as I go. If there is more interest, I may increase the frequency, but for now, this feels like a good pace for exploration and understanding.

As I move forward, I want to acknowledge that there are important protocols surrounding the sharing of teachings. Some teachings are given with protocol and must be shared in person, whether in sacred spaces such as sweat lodges or other ceremonies. Others are meant to be taught solely by Elders or carried forward in ways specific to tradition. I will do my best to honor these boundaries, ensuring that the teachings I share are done so with respect and in line with the cultural practices I understand. Where I am uncertain of the rules, I will proceed with humility and care, seeking guidance when needed.

This is a personal journey as much as it is a shared one. I look forward to uncovering the wisdom these teachings offer and hope to create a space for meaningful connection and reflection along the way.

These teachings are integral to my identity, yet I acknowledge that there is always more to learn. While I will share my reflections and understandings here, I encourage you to seek out Elders within your own community if you want to learn more about these teachings. Elders carry the wisdom, experience, and cultural knowledge that is essential to understanding the teachings in their full depth and significance. They are the keepers of tradition and are entrusted with the responsibility of sharing the teachings in the appropriate contexts, often with ceremony or protocol.

The insights I share are based on my own journey of discovery, but they are not a substitute for the guidance of those who carry the teachings. I do not claim to have all the answers, nor can I guarantee the accuracy of my interpretations. Cultural teachings like the Seven Grandfathers are complex and sacred, and it is important to approach them with humility, respect, and the recognition that true understanding often comes through personal connection and community.

If you are drawn to these teachings, please make an effort to reach out to Elders, engage in conversations, and participate in community events or ceremonies where appropriate. These experiences provide the opportunity to learn in ways that honor tradition and ensure the teachings are passed on with authenticity and care. By seeking wisdom directly from the Elders, you contribute to the preservation and respect of these practices for future generations.

I would love to hear from you!
